Cost to repair a heat pump in Tampa Bay

Common heat pump repairs

  • Thermostat repair: $50-$200+

Signs of a broken thermostat include: Your heat pump is not turning on after you adjust the temperature, the room temperature isn't matching the set temperature, your heat pump is running non-stop, and/or your thermostat is totally unresponsive.

  • Reversing valve repair: $450–$1,500+

Signs of a broken reversing valve include: Your heat pump is stuck in either cooling mode or heating mode—regardless of how you set the thermostat.

  • Blower motor replacement: $550-$1,000+

Signs of a broken blower motor include: Your heat pump has longer-than-normal cooling or heating cycles, higher energy bills and/or weak air exiting your vents.

  • Capacitor replacement: $200-$400+

Signs of a worn out capacitor include: You're not feeling any cold or hot air coming from the vents, you hear a humming noise coming from your heat pump (outdoor unit) and/or your heat pump is struggling to start.

  • Compressor replacement: $1,500+

Signs of a burned out compressor include: Your heat pump isn't cooling or heating your home, you hear a ticking or rattling noise coming from your heat pump (outdoor unit) and/or you see moisture pooled inside your outdoor unit (which means refrigerant could be leaking from the compressor).

Note: Rarely can a tech repair your compressor in the field, so you'll most likely need to replace your compressor. Since a compressor is so expensive to replace, you may be better off getting a new heat pump altogether.

DIY Fixes

Before you call us, try these quick fixes:

1) Check the thermostat: Make sure your thermostat is set to the correct setting (HEAT or COOL, depending on the season). Then, try adjusting the temperature by 5 degrees and see if your heat pump starts working again. If your thermostat is unresponsive, you can try replacing the batteries. If that doesn't work, contact a pro for help.

2) Check the air filter: If it's dirty, change it. A dirty air filter can overwork your system, leading to system failure and expensive repairs.

3) Check the circuit breaker: Heat pump still won't turn on? A power spike may have tripped the heat pump circuit breaker. Go to your electrical panel and check the breaker. If it's tripped, turn it to the OFF position, then the ON position. If the breaker trips again, contact us immediately as there is a problem elsewhere.
